A Suburban City Girl in A Small Town

Moment by moment……

Tuesday’s TMI: 6-10

Continuing on………

6: Any tattoos?

Yes, I have three and I want a few more. I have my daughter’s names around my right ankle, some lettering on my other ankle and a rose with a heart on the inside of my left leg. I’d like for my sisters and I to get our sisters’ tattoo and then, I’d like something that signifies my Italian/Irish heritage.

7: Any piercings?

Yes, I have three piercing in each ear.

8: OTP?

I have no clue what this is! LOL!

9: Favorite show?

Um…I really don’t watch much TV. If the TV is on, it’s background noise. Push come to shove, I like NCIS, House Hunters International and Rehab Addict.

10: Favorite bands?

This is really hard because there’s so much good music out there! Currently, I love Celtic Thunder, Ryan Kelly, Neil Byrne, Acoustic By Candlelight, Black Veiled Brides and several movie soundtracks! This list can go on and on, to be honest. I’ve listed only what I’ve listened to in the past few days. Then, there’s all the classical music I love, thanks to my Dad.

More next week………..

Acoustic By Candlelight – 2/6/2014

Ryan Kelly, myself and Neil ByrneI thought I’d write a few moments from last Friday night’s concert.

First of all, the venue was perfect. Although, there is a certain amount of excitement surrounding a large concert, I find I prefer the more intimate ones the best.

My brother and I arrived at McGonigal’s Pub and had a bite to eat. Delicious! We lined up on the stairs with others and had the pleasure of meeting Kathy and Joe who had driven down from MN for the show. An hour’s wait went by quickly and before long, we were face to face with Angie who was taking our tickets. Kathy and Joe secured us near front row seat….on RYAN’S SIDE! I was so excited!!!

The show began soon after with me and my brother surrounded by our new ABC/CT friends. I’m going to have a fan-girl moment here and say I squeeed just a little bit when I saw Ryan. Wearing his white shirt and black vest, he looked amazing!!! Neil looked stunning as well. I was a little sad that I couldn’t see more of Neil. One thing about gigs like this that excites me is getting to see musicians really play. Although, I was able to see Ryan play, I couldn’t always see Neil.

So the show goes on and I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the banter! I enjoyed Ryan’s recognition of me as an ABC newbie. I enjoyed, when they were singing 500 Miles and Ryan sang, “I’m gonna be the man who’s coming home for you and you and you and you and you…”, the first “for you” he pointed and looked directly at me! I enjoyed watching Ryan’s guitar face in person and I enjoyed watching the expression of every song cross Neil’s face as he sang. I enjoyed it when Neil started to sing out of turn and cracked himself up so much he had a hard time recovering. I enjoyed the guys talking about the polar vortex and how their sensitive Irish skin was made for rain and not snow.

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute!!!!

One thing I do want to say is this: these guys sounded not as good as their CD but BETTER!!! This is a rarity in a time of the Autotune Artist!

Then came the part I had been both looking forward to and dreading. Meeting them. First of all, I’ve met music artists before (i.e The Script and a several Christian artists) and usually, when they say after a show they’ll be out in a few minutes, they mean half hour or so. I’ve never minded waiting. However, when Neil and Ryan said they will be out in a few minutes, they meant a few minutes. So we waited and then our turn came. I went on my own to allow both my brother and I our own time with them.

Approaching them, two things struck me. The first was while Ryan photographs as a uniquely handsome man, up close and personal, he is physically beautiful! He looks directly at you when you’re talking, is very expressive and seems to share in every emotion. Neil is altogether handsome, always smiling and has that playful Irish glimmer in his eye (like he’s always up to something). Both gentlemen were very warm and welcoming.

So with a hard swallow trying to calm my nerves, I quickly told them both how I wanted to see Celtic Thunder in October but I was accompanying my mom on a trip to Ireland. I said, “that’s the definition of irony” and Neil replied, “Oh yeah it is!”. So I thanked them profusely for the concert, their music and this opportunity. Then I told Neil how much I enjoyed Pale Blue Jak and would he be releasing another solo CD soon. His face lit up and he emphatically said, “Yes!” I said, “Oh, that’s so good! I’m so excited!” Ryan took the insert of the Life CD I brought with me and said, “What’s your name, darling? I replied and gave the spelling (V-I-K-K-I) and he started to sign the back inside cover. Neil finished up answering my question about his solo CD by saying, “As we usually say, watch this space.” His smile alone can bring enough warmth to break through any polar vortex.

Ryan handed me back my insert and I gave it to Neil and asked him to sign. He asked where and I said the cover is fine. Angie jumped in and said, “No, you don’t want him to sign the cover” and both guys laughed. I said, “It’s really ok.” Thankfully, Neil put the black marker away, grabbed a silver one and immediately wrote over the lyrics, spelling my name wrong (but I think I can forgive him for that). So while he was doing that, I turned my attention to Ryan, quickly telling him how, when I first got my Life CD, my 15-year old and I were in the car listening to it when Live for Life came on. I told him how she said, “Mom, this song needs air” and despite below freezing temperatures, we rolled down the windows, turned up the heat and let the volume explode all over my town. Ryan laughed and said, “Oh did you?” as Neil said, “That’s brilliant!”

Then I looked at Ryan and said, “I cannot thank you enough for this CD. It is literally the anthem of my life.” (What I did not tell him is that so many of the songs resonated with me, from being in a 10-year long abusive relationship to discovering and building a life for myself and my two girls. Live for Life is literally my song of victory for me and my girls!) He looked directly at me and said, “Thank you for that!” and I said, “No, thank YOU for that!”

To be honest, this all happened within a few minutes but I was conscious of people waiting behind me, their time, etc.Neil asked if I would like a photo and I said yes. So I stood between them and they both put their arms around me. Now, at this point, I was still shaking like a leaf. I know I put my hand on Neil’s back but my right hand, which was on Ryan’s back, was shaking so much that I was actually tapping Ryan’s back. I quickly pulled my hand away! Angie took the only photo that actually came out good. I thanked them again, waited for my brother and left a happy and contented girl.

Thus endeth my first ABC experience. It was wonderful!!!!! I can’t wait to do it again!

Addendum: In being awestruck by the whole experience, I forgot to give Neil and Ryan the Starbucks gift cards we got for them. They will be going in the mail today.

Gaudete

Now is the time for grace…..this Latin hymn reminds us once again that a King has come and it is time to rejoice!

I actually hoped to post Celtic Thunder‘s version of this song but I reckon the CD is still too new for there to be a video of their version. Yet this version is pretty close to the Celtic Thunder version and I quite enjoyed it.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

I have to be honest. I really have not ever been a huge fan of this song until I heard it in the movie “Elf”. Even after, I wasn’t too much of  a fan. To me, it was a fun song to sing along and that’s about it. Nothing really special.

A few years ago, Celtic Thunder put this in their Christmas DVD. Ryan Kelly (and a female artist whose name I do not know – sorry) performed it. Ok, I still wasn’t crazy about the song but felt it was good enough and cute enough to make the countdown.

So I searched and searched thinking someone had to have captured that moment from the DVD. No such luck. Well, it would seem a have a leprechaun on my side somewhere because Mr. Kelly was a busy man this summer. He paired with Natalie Toro and made a video.

Now, it’s full of cheese – like most Christmas videos are – and even slightly weird however, I do LOVE the Celtic twist to this song. And of course, I’m a fan of the video.

Here is it…enjoy!

Not Far Apart

For all those who have loved ones who will not be with you this Christmas, I dedicate the first official song of this countdown to you. May God shine brightly in your hearts. May your memories be abundant and cheerful and may you find comfort in knowing you’re really not that far apart.

Acoustically Irish

I’ve always loved Irish music and the fast paced beat it brings. But to be honest with you, I really haven’t paid much attention until recently. As I’m heading to England on October 17th and then onto Ireland on October 21 to meet family and help my mom fulfill a lifelong dream of hers, Celtic music has definitely been playing in the current soundtrack of my life. And I’ve been listening to nothing but for weeks now.

So with that, I’m going to attempt to write my first music review on a brand new CD I bought this weekend. It’s called “Acoustically Irish” by Ryan Kelly and Neil Byrne of Celtic Thunder fame.

I heard about the Acoustic By Candlelight tour while search for more Ryan Kelly music. This was after I bought his solo CD “In Time” recorded back in 2010. YouTube fed my hunger for more of this type of music – beautiful, honest, simple, and NO auto-tune to be found! Between YouTube and Twitter, I caught wind of a CD being released by two of my favorite members of Celtic Thunder (under the name of Acoustic By Candlelight) and could not wait to get it.

I was not disappointed!

First of all, I think I’ve fallen in love with guitar music. Well, that’s not really a quality statement because I’ve always loved guitar music. I remember sitting outside of a cafe in Rome listening to a young man playing his guitar and thinking how much he must love that thing. He played it with such purity. So it’s so surprise that I liked this CD at the first listen. There’s loads of brilliant guitar playing (is there any guitar Neil Byrne can’t play?), lovely percussion and violins provided by a few band members. Vocally, there’s a unique and beautiful harmony between Ryan Kelly and Neil Byrne. While Neil provides the structure and the bones, Ryan provides the heart and the emotions.

So I thought I’d talk about a few of the tracks that caught my attention.

The CD opens up with “Don’t Go” which is merely an invitation. Sit down, put your feet up, grab a pint and just enjoy the music. That’s exactly the mood it sets preparing you for the remaining 10 tracks.

“The Water is Wide” is a favorite of mine here as this is a song I did with my Chamber Singers group back in the day (when I was in high school). Neil does a lovely rendition of this song, keeping it simple yet making it memorable. I always enjoy the quieter songs Neil sings because I enjoy the total range in his voice. He makes it sound effortless and the effect is beautiful.

Listening to the song “Back Home in Derry”, I’m very much reminded of  “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. I love the sea, sea tales and find their tragedies most mournful. Ryan takes this song, and makes it his own story/song with strong vocals and husky tones. One thing I really liked in this song was the marriage between Neil’s guitars and Nicole’s violin. There are some measures where one cannot be distinguished from another and it creates a very lovely celtic undertone for this song. Like so many other songs, this song transforms me aboard the ship being sung about. I feel the icy wind in my face and the desperation of those around me. This song was a real plus for me and very well done.

Adding a bit of Americana to the CD is a cover of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl”. While this cover hits all the marks for being well done, it is the opinion of this review that no one can do this song and make me want to get up and dance to it like Van Morrison. Still enjoyable, though.

Probably my absolute favorite song on the CD is “No Man’s Land”. Ryan starts out acapella and I cannot say enough about how brave this is in a world where everything is so auto-tuned!! I’m such a huge fan of this. There is little the accompanies him on his journey through this song. Sitting besides a grave of a fallen soldier, Ryan talks to him, allowing us to imagine along with him the life of Private William McBride and those he left behind to fight. Ryan brings this young man to life and lovingly buries him with all the honor a soldier is due. This is one of two the songs on the CD that’s hard for me to get through without shedding a tear or two.

The other song that gets me is “The Fields of Athenry”. Again, a quiet haunting weaves through this song as it tells the story of young man imprisoned for stealing corn during the time of the great famine. Listening to it over and over, I found a love song in the midst of this tale. A young man bids his wife to raise their son well and she, in turn, stays as close to him as possible until he leaves. Neil and Ryan tackle this with perfect harmony that increases in intensity with each verse. Nicole’s lonely violin speaks throughout and I feel this song will sink into my heart and be with me for a long time.

The other songs on this CD are not to be overlooked in listening however, I’ll leave you to draw your own opinions. Admittedly, I am a huge fan of Celtic Thunder. However, as much as I love it when the guys come together, it is their solo work that has captivated me. Ryan and Neil tell their Celtic stories with almost every song on this CD and yet it sounds nothing like Celtic Thunder. We get to see a side of them that is quite vulnerable musically. This is one of those projects that has me hoping and praying for a second ABC CD!

I truly believe we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg where the talent and symmetry of Ryan Kelly and Neil Byrne are concerned. I look forward to more from these gents. So buy it! Download it! Listen to it! Acoustic By Candlelight’s “Acoustically Irish” is definitely worth it!
